Tech for Dreaming Community Update: 02-DEC-2022
Dear Tech for Dreaming Community,
2022 was an exciting year for Tech for Dreaming as we continued to grow the community (415 members on Meetup, 428 followers on Twitter), we hosted several exciting events (see our YouTube channel for the event recordings), and had plenty of engaging discussions occurring within our Discord server.
If you missed any of our 2022 events, here is a recap:
- Lucid Dream Induction with Sleep EEG Wearables & Open-Source Dream Engineering. In this event, we were joined by Mahdad Jafarzadeh from the Donders Institute for Brain, Cognition and Behaviour in The Netherlands. We discussed: the current limitations of lucid dreaming literature, the importance of open-source software like Dreamento, and an overview of an upcoming lucid dream induction study using an EEG wearable
- Lucid dreaming. There’s an app for that. In this event, we discussed how apps on mobile devices can help us lucid dream. We were joined by people working on mobile apps designed to make lucid dreaming more accessible, including: the Lucidly app, the WordWithin app, and the Lucid Experiment app from Northwestern University.
- Review of Current Lucid Dreaming Tech. In this event, we reviewed a few lucid dreaming technology products including, but not limited to, the Somni mask, Remee mask, binaural beats apps, and galantamine. We then generally discussed how we can move toward a world of on-demand lucid dreaming enabled by technology.
- Cannabis, Psychedelics, and Lucid Dreaming. In this event on April 20th, we discussed how ancient plant and fungi technology — cannabis and psychedelics — overlap with, and influence lucid dreaming.
- Designing Community Experiments for Lucid Dream Induction. In our first event of 2022, we brainstormed how to test lucid dreaming technology, together. As a community, we have the opportunity to test cutting-edge lucid dream induction techniques that arise from community projects and ideas that typically go unfunded in the academic research community.
- And in case you missed it, in 2021 we were joined by Ben Baird, Karen Konkoly, and Jarrod Gott.
Looking ahead to 2023, we’ll keep the events coming and there’s a big opportunity to get more real-world projects progressing that use technology to make lucid dreaming more accessible. We’re on a frontier of discovery. What we do in this community will change the world and forever alter our understanding of consciousness and reality.
If you have any feedback on how to improve the community, thoughts on ways to accelerate research and projects (e.g. funding sources), ideas for future event topics, or just want to help, please email me at bgilan[AT]gmail[DOT]com.
As a fun ending, here’s what OpenAI’s new ChatGPT service thinks we should do in 2023.
Onward!
